How To Decorate Your Front Porch for Fall in 6 Easy Steps

To be honest, this post is coming at you very late in the fall decorating season… sorry!!! If you haven’t decorated your front porch yet, I’ve got a few tips to help you make your front porch look great. If you’ve already decorated, just pin this post for next year!

I want to start by saying that I absolutely love using unique pumpkins to decorate my front porch, but they can be so hard to find in Chicago. I recommend traveling outside of the city to a greenhouse. My favorite place is about an hour south called Sunrise Greenhouse. They have an amazing selection of pumpkins, gourds, and mums.

TIP 1: BUY YOUR DECOR EARLY

Buy your pumpkins, gourds, and mums very early in the season to choose from the best selection. The first week of September is the most ideal. This year I waited until October and I was lucky I found anything! Very slim pickings.

TIP 2: BUY MORE THAN WHAT YOU THINK YOU’LL NEED

I never go in with a plan because I am pretty good at visualizing my front porch. However, I will say just when you think you have enough decor throw in a few more. You will not regret it. Make sure you get pumpkins in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors!

TIP 3: STICK TO A COLOR THEME

Are you a muted fall color kind of gal or do you love traditional bright orange? Pick a lane and stay in it.

TIP 4: PAY ATTENTION TO SHAPE

If you love the stacked pumpkin look, make sure you test their stackability at the greenhouse. Not all pumpkins stack well.

TIP 5: IT’S ALL ABOUT BALANCE

When you get your pumpkins home, start dividing them up equally into two piles. I like to start with the biggest pumpkins first and work my way down to the smallest. On my front porch this year, I placed a basket of mums on one side and stacked pumpkins on the other. They are the same height therefore it works!

TIP 6: MAKE IT INTERESTING

Here’s where you can get creative. Like I said earlier, I love picking out the most unique (some might say ugly) pumpkins. That alone helps create visual interest. You can also add interest by tipping pumpkins on their sides, stacking a few on top of each other, and mixing colors.

I hope these tips help you decorate your front porch with ease! If you have any tips you’d like to share with me, I’d love to know! Leave me a comment below.
